Howard Martin Donation

UBC receives $7.2 million from the estate of Howard Martin, real estate developer, philanthropist, community, business leader and champion of education.

Martin was the key force behind the creation of the Clovelly-Caulfeild neighbourhood in West Vancouver and where in 1954 he donated 10 acres of land to establish the Caulfeild Elementary School.

Before his death in 1994, a major part of Howard Martin’s estate was set aside in his will to be later divided among four of his most favoured organizations: Central City Foundation, West Vancouver Community Foundation, the Salvation Army and the University of British Columbia.

As former UBC President Stephen Toope noted when accepting the “extremely generous” bequest, it came “from a man who made investing in future generations through education, a priority.”
