Scholars in Track Shoes
The ancient Latin credo mens sana in corpore sano sano – a healthy mind in a healthy body – has long been an ideal to which many aspire but few can realize.
And then there were the record number UBC Thunderbird student/athletes – 149 in total – honoured at the UBC annual Academic All-Canadian Breakfast of Champions held in the Thunderbird Arena and hosted by President Arvind Gupta.
To earn their place at the select (but ever-growing) table, students had to achieve an 80 percent plus average in their studies, while competing in a varsity sport during the 2013/14 season.
Mens sana indeed or as Gupta notes: “This accomplishment illustrates what I value most about university athletics – people pursuing their passion with such gusto that they can achieve otherwise unimaginable results.”
