An Evolution and Lasting Legacy

An Evolution and Lasting Legacy

After eight years of service, Professor Stephen Toope, vice-chancellor and 12th president of the University of British Columbia, stepped away from the helm and into the world of international law and relations.

Under what UBC Board of Governors Chair Bill Levine calls Toope’s “truly outstanding” accomplishments and eight years of inclusive guidance, crystalized in Toope’s strategic Place and Promise plan, UBC consistently ranks among the world’s top 40 universities in terms of reach, quality and recognition.

In 2012, Toope launched the $1.5-billion ‘start an evolution’ fund-raising campaign, among the largest in Canadian university history; it passed the $1-billion mark within a year. Spurred along by Toope’s “vision and passion for UBC”, Levine says UBC is globally recognized as a top research university, attracting more than $500 million per annum in funding.

Thank you, Stephen.
