Varsity Sports, Powered Up

UBC alumnus, investment-management mogul and noted philanthropist Ken Woods donated $1 million to establish The Ken Woods Award for UBC varsity athletes. The scholarships will be spread over 10 years, with UBC providing near-matching funds of $90,000 per annum.

As an active fan and supporter of UBC varsity sports, Woods believes that backing the athletes in their pursuit of excellence, in academics and on the fields, is worth every dollar.

“To assist students who aspire to excel both academically and athletically is indeed an honour and an excellent way of giving back to my alma mater,” said Woods. “High achievers who learn to compete in a team environment under the mentoring of excellent coaches and professors should develop great life skills, establish strong friendships and lasting memorable experiences.”

Award candidates are evaluated by an awards committee, based on the recommendation of their coaches, their academic achievements and leadership abilities on campus and in the community.
