A New Beginning
Education is a basic need for success in life, let alone survival. In recognition of this, UBC and the Vancouver Island University offer free tuition to students who have been wards of the BC government. The Youth in Care Tuition Waiver program started in September 2014 and saw 17 students enrolled in the 2014/15 academic year – 11 on the UBC Vancouver campus and 6 in the Okanagan. For the young adults selected, the financial and intangible effects will be profound and more certainly life changing.
Additionally, there is an ongoing push among family-support advocates to convince the provincial government to extend its housing, education, health, financial and other support systems to those in foster care by another three years or until these young adults reach their 21st birthday and when they are far better equipped to make their own way in life.
