UBC Okanagan Votes in Favour of New Library and Learning Space
UBC Okanagan students voted their wishes — and opened up their wallets — to financially support the massive expansion of the campus library and learning space. Spearheaded by the UBC Students Union Okanagan (UBSCUO), the referendum in mid-October asked students whether or not to support a $70 annual student levy to fund one-third of the project. Eighty five percent of voting students voted yes.
With the students’ commitment now secured, the remaining funding from government and other sources can now be pursued. Valued at up to $30 million depending upon the final configuration and when complete, the project will more than double the size of the existing facility, adding about 4,180 square meters (45,000 square feet) of “dynamic, technologically advanced learning space” to the UBC Okanagan campus – and turn new pages in students’ participation and self-funding commitment to future academic success.
